Studio Eccentric

adjective&nbsp; &nbsp; / Ik’sen.trlk /
Unconventional, slightly strange or unusual, sometimes in a humorous way.

With the Korean philosophy of reinterpretation and the desire to mix various elements and cultures without being bound by trends or norms, we take a deep dive into and reflect on broader contexts of place to find the right solution for the site and the client. With an open mind, we design original and unexpected spaces that resonate with users by reassembling even the most obvious elements. Through an architectural approach, we reimagine typologies to guide our space programming and approach spaces holistically. We layer and juxtapose them with rich design elements to create a well-balanced space that does not overwhelm, similar to how leftover fabrics are made into a beautiful Jogakbo, a traditional Korean patchwork. Challenging the status quo, but doing so in an understated way, is what we call ‘eccentric’.

Founder Seuk Hoon Kim mulled over a sense of cultural identity, moving between Korea and the United States early as a child. Having lived in different regions from California to Texas to New York region in the US, he naturally developed the ability to absorb different cultures with an open mind. The word ‘eccentric’ was a word that professors often used to discribe his work during his critique at Columbia University. He named his studio after it, which sums up his attitude towards uncommon interpretations of elements that might feel familiar to everyone else.

Our Approach

I.&nbsp; Deep Context Analysis / 깊은 맥락 파악

We delve into the site’s physical, historical, social, cultural, and functional contexts and reflect them in the design. We design a space that embraces the contemporary reinterpretation of locality. With comprehensive analysis of the surroundings, we collect and reassemble small fragments to develop engaging space programs. Even with elements that everyone can see and are familiar with, we take fresh perspectives and reinterpret them to create original spaces that fit the site. We like hiding our intentions initially to offer users a little joy of discovery. Research enables us to lead collaboration to identify and select artists and craftsmen suitable for each space, who are inspired by locality or working with local materials, to help the space evolve.

	<img width="1500" height="844" width_o="1500" height_o="844" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a7ba2b7870961505b45d6a0cfac4fb60965a2162c7b1bc5f64f231629b273c37/01.jpg" data-mid="233913869" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/a7ba2b7870961505b45d6a0cfac4fb60965a2162c7b1bc5f64f231629b273c37/01.jpg" />

II.&nbsp; Architectural Approach / 건축적 접근

With our Founder trained in Architecture, we reimagine and reinterpret the typology of a site to develop the zoning and refinement during the space programming. We start by looking at the space as a whole to broaden our palette. We look for regularities such as grids and symmetry in the planes and extend them to the overall design to achieve a harmonious and well organized space. Like a beautiful Jogakbo, traditional Korean patchwork made from scraps of leftover fabrics, we layer, juxtapose, and integrate various design elements, from colors, patterns, finishes, lighting, and artwork. We find the right personality to fit the space by applying rich design elements in moderation, creating a cohesive deisgn with lines that fit together.

	<img width="1500" height="844" width_o="1500" height_o="844" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e1d3465fd64f32e2c3881493d4f3cbaa905cd7fa60d91e16e3eb98a0076cdd80/02.jpg" data-mid="233913883" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e1d3465fd64f32e2c3881493d4f3cbaa905cd7fa60d91e16e3eb98a0076cdd80/02.jpg" />

III.&nbsp; Client and User Oriented / 고객과 사용자 중심의 접근

Instead of insisting on a specific style unique to our Studio, we focus on the client’s needs and the site. We find solutions to problems, placing behaviors the client wants to encourage in the space at the core. Before proposing a specific deesign, we start with a floor plan, investigating the interactions we want to encourage in the space, based on the relationship between the space and the user. We aim to create a space that users can relate to, where like-minded people can interact. We imagine a space that we can enjoy with people we like. The design package we develop to deliver to the contractor carries all necessary information in great detial to ensure our design is manifested as originally planned.

	<img width="1500" height="844" width_o="1500" height_o="844" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/5447980b5c9065ee13c75ee4c347775ca6ddc4e4c4bb3e744f51773fbf0171ba/03.jpg" data-mid="233913919" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/5447980b5c9065ee13c75ee4c347775ca6ddc4e4c4bb3e744f51773fbf0171ba/03.jpg" />

IV.&nbsp; Korean Attitude / 한국적 태도

With a flexible and open mindset and the focus on absorbing and mixing various elements and cultures, and a sophisticated Korean flair for contrast, juxtaposition, and layering, we value reinterpretation of heritage, pursuing work that harmonizes Western and Eastern cultures. We admire the bold ‘sublime’ geometry by Etienne-Louis Boullee and Claude-Nicolas Leodoux, architects who cast off the decorative excesses of the Baroque and Rococo styles as dissatisfaction with the old regime fermented into revolutionary upheaval in late 18-century France. We equally admire the oriental value of harmony in blending different elements of the space while reflecting the Korean aesthetic, such as ink painting’s gradual shade and permeating flow, into our work. Our own Studio space, located in the middle of Gyeongdong Market, a long-surviving traditional market in Seoul, is very Korean and foreign at the same time, full of unexpectedness and reinterpretation, reflecting the true color of the Studio.

Located in Pangyo, one of Korea’s most
successful new-town developments and a leading technology district, Hyatt Place
Seoul Pangyo was designed around the idea of ‘The Pangyo Contrast.’

Pangyo is a city of contrasts. A planned
urban environment shaped by IT and bio-tech industries, yet closely connected
to residential life, green networks, and contemporary lifestyle culture. Rather
than treating these qualities separately, the design brings them together into
a hospitality experience that feels efficient, relaxed, refined, and approachable.

The project interprets the Hyatt Place
brand through the local character of Pangyo. The buffet restaurant, The
Kitchen, introduces a warm and expressive atmosphere, balancing bold material
gestures with elegant spatial composition. Event spaces, including the
pre-function zone, banquet hall, and event rooms, are designed with a more
refined and welcoming tone, while the fitness area reflects a sense of linear
direction and movement.

Across the project, materiality plays an
important role in connecting different programs into a coherent experience.
Stone, metal, wood, fabric, mirror, and textured panels are layered with
restraint, creating spaces that feel contemporary without becoming excessive.

Through this approach, Hyatt Place Seoul
Pangyo becomes more than a hotel. It is a place where work, travel, dining,
gathering, and rest can coexist naturally, reflecting the evolving lifestyle of
Pangyo and its users.

The project interprets the Hyatt Place

gestures with elegant spatial composition. Event spaces, including the
pre-function zone, banquet hall, and event rooms, are designed with a more

direction and movement.

Chungjang-ro has long been one of the
central streets of Gwangju, shaped by the continuous flow of people over
generations. Fashion, food, and culture naturally converge here, making it an
urban lifestyle hub frequented by both younger generations and local residents.
Through its cafes, shops, festivals, and performances, the street has
accumulated layers of the city’s everyday life and collective memory.

A place where tradition and modernity, the
ordinary and the unexpected coexist, Chungjang-ro most vividly embodies Gwangju’s
distinctive artistic energy and sense of freedom, captured in the phrase, ‘The
Road of Art, Freedom, and Youth.’

Set within this context, L7 Chungjang is
envisioned as an urban lifestyle hotel for MZ-generation travelers, domestic
and international business guests, and creatively minded consumers. More than
simply a place to stay, the hotel serves as a platform where new inspirations
and experiences intersect, offering guests a distinctive way to engage with and
experience the city.

‘The Urban Canvas’ is the central concept
that defines and symbolizes L7 Chungjang. The streets, people, culture, and
energy of Chungjang become a canvas upon which multiple layers of the city are
expressed throughout the hotel. Each space acts as a frame capturing a
different urban scene, while guests complete their own experiences upon this
evolving canvas.

Rather than merely reproducing local
characteristics, L7 Chungjang reinterprets them through a contemporary and
trend-conscious perspective that reflects both the present and the future of
Chungjang. The city’s identity, rooted in art, freedom, and youth, is naturally
expressed through sensorial spatial compositions and lifestyle-oriented
programs.

By becoming part of the neighborhood’s
everyday life, the hotel introduces a new rhythm to the urban landscape.
