A leading Korean bank, Hana Bank, asked the Studio to design an exclusive club space for their highest net worth individual clients in an old and affluent neighborhood Dogok-dong in Gangnam, south of the river in Seoul. Realizing private banking is underpinned by personal service, ranging from holiday booking to financial programs to support the next generation, the design team decided to center on modest and understated Korean hospitality. Utilizing their expertise in hotel design, they devised space programming similar to hotel’s banquet rooms, executive suites, and club lounge and applied Korean aesthetics throughout the club. The lobby lounge, as center of the club, is designed to feel like sitting on a Daechung veranda, which expands limited internal spaces to the outside or allows external spaces to enter the interior of a traditional Korean house, a Hanok, where people gather to rest, entertain, and enjoy nature. The Studio designed glass resembles a layered texture of hemp cloth and reflects lines reminiscent of Korean patchwork and Hanok, where its components are joined without any bolts. Additionally on the center of the lounge, the guests will encounter the sculpture of Bae Lee, internationally famed Korean artist, which expresses abstract Korean aesthetics. Wooden and earthy colors used for different counseling rooms also encapsulate the unpretentious state of Korean hospitality. Chosen artworks of Hyong Keun Yun and Yoowan Yang also harmonizes throughout the space.
