“Extension and Transformation”

South Korea’s new hostel brand, ‘Bed Radio’ has launched its first property in Jeju Island, Korea, April 2019.  This new hostel brand aims to provide new culture of hospitality in fulfilling the needs of the Millennial Generation travelers and to resolve problems among existing poor-conditioned guesthouses and Airbnb properties.  The first property of Bed Radio is designed by Seoul based award-winning Studio Eccentric of Seuk Hoon Kim; former Creative Director of Studio GAIA, New York and Seoul.

As per Bed Radio’s moto of providing local experience and enhancing local community, the main objective for the new space was to design an environment where not only travelers could rest, but also local residents could mingle together. In the thoughts of what was special about Jeju Island and what should be expressed in this hospitality environment, it was very typical only to imagine the exotic materials and finishes of Jeju, but Studio Eccentric came to its own conclusion that this hostel needed to serve as a space where people could enjoy the four seasons and the nature scenery of Jeju itself.  Especially, the Sanji-stream right in front of the hostel was once well known to be one of ten must-see sceneries since Joseon Dynasty, back in fourteen-century.

The ‘Bed Radio Lounge’, which serves as café at daytime and bar at nighttime, offers a panoramic view to the Sanji-stream as the front wide operable windows fully tilt open; the bar top is located beneath the tilted windows, where people can drink and enjoy together inside and outside of the lounge.  The garage space is opened to people as well, named as of ‘Garage Lounge’, providing open-shaded casual environment with movable furniture pieces where people can easily move around in favoring different size of party groups.  Not only both Bed Radio Lounge and Garage Lounge visually connect to adjacent environment, but also share space to enjoy, including Sanji-stream.

In contrast to the vibrant atmosphere lounges on the ground floor, 15 guestrooms located above provide various types of rooms, ranging from dormitory rooms to queen-size bed guestrooms.  The design and the tone-and-manner of the guestrooms are articulated minimally, providing environment for full comfort.  Unitized furniture system in each guestroom incorporates all the necessary amenities needed, giving extra spacious atmosphere to the room.
