Our Approach

I.  Deep Context Analysis / 깊은 맥락 파악

We delve into the site’s physical, historical, social, cultural, and functional contexts and reflect them in the design. We design a space that embraces the contemporary reinterpretation of locality. With comprehensive analysis of the surroundings, we collect and reassemble small fragments to develop engaging space programs. Even with elements that everyone can see and are familiar with, we take fresh perspectives and reinterpret them to create original spaces that fit the site. We like hiding our intentions initially to offer users a little joy of discovery. Research enables us to lead collaboration to identify and select artists and craftsmen suitable for each space, who are inspired by locality or working with local materials, to help the space evolve.

II.  Architectural Approach / 건축적 접근

With our Founder trained in Architecture, we reimagine and reinterpret the typology of a site to develop the zoning and refinement during the space programming. We start by looking at the space as a whole to broaden our palette. We look for regularities such as grids and symmetry in the planes and extend them to the overall design to achieve a harmonious and well organized space. Like a beautiful Jogakbo, traditional Korean patchwork made from scraps of leftover fabrics, we layer, juxtapose, and integrate various design elements, from colors, patterns, finishes, lighting, and artwork. We find the right personality to fit the space by applying rich design elements in moderation, creating a cohesive deisgn with lines that fit together.

III.  Client and User Oriented / 고객과 사용자 중심의 접근

Instead of insisting on a specific style unique to our Studio, we focus on the client’s needs and the site. We find solutions to problems, placing behaviors the client wants to encourage in the space at the core. Before proposing a specific deesign, we start with a floor plan, investigating the interactions we want to encourage in the space, based on the relationship between the space and the user. We aim to create a space that users can relate to, where like-minded people can interact. We imagine a space that we can enjoy with people we like. The design package we develop to deliver to the contractor carries all necessary information in great detial to ensure our design is manifested as originally planned.

IV.  Korean Attitude / 한국적 태도

With a flexible and open mindset and the focus on absorbing and mixing various elements and cultures, and a sophisticated Korean flair for contrast, juxtaposition, and layering, we value reinterpretation of heritage, pursuing work that harmonizes Western and Eastern cultures. We admire the bold ‘sublime’ geometry by Etienne-Louis Boullee and Claude-Nicolas Leodoux, architects who cast off the decorative excesses of the Baroque and Rococo styles as dissatisfaction with the old regime fermented into revolutionary upheaval in late 18-century France. We equally admire the oriental value of harmony in blending different elements of the space while reflecting the Korean aesthetic, such as ink painting’s gradual shade and permeating flow, into our work. Our own Studio space, located in the middle of Gyeongdong Market, a long-surviving traditional market in Seoul, is very Korean and foreign at the same time, full of unexpectedness and reinterpretation, reflecting the true color of the Studio.
